Express VPN was acquired by Kape Technologies for $ 936 million. This is a staggering amount for a VPN company, as Kape Technologies is not their first purchase from a VPN company. In his pocket, we also find Private Internet Access, Cyberghost or ZenMate.

Private Internet Access was acquired for $ 95 million in 2019, which means that in the space of 2 years, the VPN industry has taken a 1000% valuation. This is also linked to the figures of ExpressVPN which totals 2.52 million customers for a revenue of $ 122 million. Business above all.

This is the motivation behind the takeover, but the name of Kape Technologies makes many people in the security and privacy world wince. Basically, Kape Technologies was called Crossrider and it’s an Israeli company specializing in Adware, so crap we get when we download certain software.

In addition, the first founder of Kape Technologies is Koby Menachemi, who is said to have worked for Unit 8200, an israeli group specializing in espionage and computer attacks. The current leader believes that this is a thing of the past and that now Kape has nothing to do with his illegal activities. The problem is that in private life, a word is not enough, it must be proven by the facts.

The tactic of Crossrider and then Kape Technologies is to buy out a lot of tech and privacy companies. And the fact that Express VPN falls into Kape’s already packed sack does not bode well. And even setting aside Kape Technologies’ highly suspect past, corporate concentration is still detrimental to innovation, which is crucial in an industry like VPN.

It also shows that if you are willing to shell out close to a billion dollars for a VPN, then the business is booming, showing an increasing concern for privacy by the general public. In reviews, ExpressVPN was rated as one of the best VPNs on the market, it was more expensive, but its speed and privacy policy and technical support was excellent. This buyout will scare away many users.

Because no one wants to entrust their private life to a company, bought by an entity whose founder was a member of what was called the Israeli NSA! Obviously, the reviews on the best VPNs are always biased, as they are “best” only for the affiliation they offer to the sites that promote them.

And I’m going to make my sandwich man and if you’re looking for a VPN that holds up, then go to Mullvad. In the many VPN reviews I have done, Mullvad comes in number 1 ahead of all the others.

And I don’t do it through affiliate because it doesn’t offer any affiliate programs! Its account creation concept is unique, its price is also unique and its privacy policy exudes serenity. It is no coincidence that Mozilla chose it for its VPN.

I promote it because if one day I have to use a VPN then I would choose Mullvad without any hesitation!
